Three Northern states announce joint electricity market, acquire equity in KEDCO.

Three northern Nigerian states, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa, have announced a partnership to form a tri-state electricity market.

This comes as the states teamed up to acquire equity stakes in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), which has Future Energies Africa as its core investor.

This was disclosed in a statement by the spokesperson of the Kano Ministry of Power and Energy, Saad Umar Faruk, on Monday.

In his comments, Kano State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Gaddafi Shehu, said the agreement was reached during a High-Level Electrification Summit held in Marrakech, Morocco, from October 16 to 19, 2025.

According to him, the three states would collaborate to explore areas of mutual benefit in their electricity markets, promoting partner regulation and cooperation.

He explained that the states’ acquisition of equity in KEDCO is a strategic move to enhance electricity distribution in the region.

Gaddafi added that a ₦50 billion electrification fund will be established to rapidly accelerate access to electricity through embedded generation, solar home systems, grid extension, and mini-grids. He also noted that the states would work with KEDCO to reduce losses from residential consumers, ensuring improved electricity supply to citizens.

“This landmark agreement marks a significant step towards improving electricity access and supply in the region, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for citizens,” Gaddafi stated.

The statement added that representatives of the three states will convene an annual international retreat and meet quarterly to review progress, set direction, and strengthenIn 5 Days ties for the northwestern tri-state electricity market.

As of July 2025, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had transferred electricity regulatory oversight to ten states, including Kogi, Niger, Ekiti, Plateau, Oyo, Ogun, Enugu, Lagos, Imo, Ondo, and Edo.

Most recently, Bayelsa and Nasarawa states were added to the list of states to which NERC has transferred regulatory oversight, while other states have unveiled laws to support the move.

This development follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signing of the Electricity Act 2023 into law in June 2023.
